Major in Music Performance with Jazz Concentration

Ball State University School of Music now offers a Major in Music Performance with a Jazz Studies Concentration.

Students study with full-time jazz professors who possess a wealth of experience as performers and teachers. Our Jazz Faculty provide students with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in today’s competitive musical world.

All students receive weekly private lessons and significant performing experience in our jazz ensembles and combos. In addition, students participate in workshops and master classes with world-renowned jazz artists. Previous guest artists include Buddy DeFranco, Wycliffe Gordon, Mike Clark, Byron Stripling, Bobby Watson and Dan Tepfer, to name a few. The Jazz Lab Ensemble, our flagship ensemble, performs six concerts a year and tours internationally every 3-4 years.  Jazz 1 performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival July 2017.

Students develop marketing, business, and publicity skills and take classes in jazz theory, composition, arranging, improvisation, pedagogy, and history. Required and self-produced senior recording projects take place in our state-of-the-art music media production studios, and students present full-length recitals in our leading-edge performance venues. The performance-rich environment at Ball State also provides students with numerous opportunities to hear concerts given by faculty, visiting artists, and resident ensembles.
