SCOTT ROUTENBERG: JAZZ PIANIST
Hailed as a "rising-star pianist" who has "found his own voice in the modern mainstream" (Scott Yanow, JAZZIZ), Scott Routenberg has performed with internationally renowned jazz musicians the likes of multiple Grammy winner Howard Levy and Christian Howes, and has opened for jazz guitar legend John Scofield. Routenberg has performed in many live contexts, from intimate solo recitals and vivacious trio dates to colorful jazz chamber ensembles and full orchestra. Praised for his singing tone "like drops of liquid gold," (Hilton Head Jazz Society), Routenberg's effusive playing connects with audiences on an emotional level. Routenberg's "distinctive original voice" as a composer (Fred Sturm) can be heard in his "well measured and flowing" motives and "uniformly logical and coherent" improvisations (Dr. Mark Gridley). "Routenberg exhibits a formidable mastery of keyboard technique, without producing a harsh or strident tone. The piano literally sings in his hands. Routenberg is also an intellect whose delight in rhythmic puzzles teases the ear and brain" (Hilton Head Jazz Society/Louise Causey Lewis). As a studio musician Routenberg has produced and recorded four critically acclaimed albums as a leader and has performed in a wide range of styles, including jazz, Brazilian jazz, Latin, funk, electronic, R&B and pop.
International and national jazz festival performances include the Montreaux Jazz Festival, Jazz à Vienne, the North Sea Jazz Festival and Indy Jazz Fest. Routenberg has played at such notable jazz clubs and venues as The Green Mill (Chicago), The Jazz Kitchen (Indianapolis), The Velvet Note (Atlanta), The Chatterbox (Indy), The Palladium (Carmel, In) and The Biltmore Hotel (Coral Gables), and has performed with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra and the Naples Philharmonic.
The Scott Routenberg Trio, featuring colleagues Nick Tucker (bass) and Cassius Goens III (drums) released their debut album Every End is a Beginning (2017) on Summit Records. Every End is a Beginning reached #65 on the JazzWeek radio chart, #33 on the Roots Music Report Top 50 Jazz Albums, and was named Jazz Album of the Week by soulandjazz.com. The album was featured multiple weeks on PRI's Jazz After Hours, soulandjazz.com's The Creative Source and Chicago's Jazz with Neil Tesser and was played on 70 stations across the United States.
Scott's jazz piano teachers include Brazilian legend Manfredo Fest (arranger for Sergio Mendes and keyboardist for Bossa Rio), Vince Maggio (student of Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans' roommate) and Chip Crawford (Grammy-winning pianist for Gregory Porter on Blue Note records).
Dr. Routenberg holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Jazz Composition from the University of Miami Frost School of Music, a Master of Music degree in Media Writing and Production from Miami, a Master of Music degree in Jazz piano from Miami and a BA in Music and Communications from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Routenberg is currently Assistant Professor of Jazz Piano at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he is a dedicated jazz educator.
